Online poker rules
There are a couple of basic rules to start. Number one would be deciding which game you are playing, as some have variations to the basic Poker rules. Then, are you playing Stud Poker or Draw Poker? The biggest difference in Stud Poker is that you don’t see opposing player’s hands. In Draw Poker, you get to see some of the cards. Read on for some more basic rules.
-
- Poker Equipment - most games use a standard 52-card deck. Aces are high, unless used in a 'straight', that is a run 1, 2, 3, 4.
- Poker Objective - Poker is pure and simple a gambling game, and to be played it needs stakes, be that virtual or real cash.
- Poker Hands - there is an order to the winning hands, so you require knowledge if you want to win. Check out our Poker hands page.
- Poker Strategies - as in every gambling game, there are strategies. Some are great, some not so good, so it's important you do your research.
Poker rules for poker hands
As part of your required knowledge to play a winning hand of Poker, you need to know the hierarchy of the Poker hands – where the ranking of the card is essential knowledge.
- Just a reminder - Aces are high unless in a 'straight run', be that of different suits or a flush of same suit.
- After Aces, the highest-ranking goes in descending order from King to Queen to Jack, then 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.
- Combinations of certain cards rank some hands higher than others. If no combination is dealt, then the highest-ranked wins the hand.
Poker hand terminology
Understanding Poker vocabulary is not a rule, but it does make playing online Poker somewhat easier. Here are a few important ones!
- Ante - the starting bet of both Stud and Draw Poker. This is a 'forced bet', in that the amount is regulated the same for all players in that hand.
- The Straddle - this is the next bet, which traditionally doubles the ante but in some games it can be as much as x4.
- Stake - the amount of a players buy-in to the game; it is also what a player is willing to bet on any particular hand.
- Fold - when a player throws in all his cards; he then can take no further part in the hand.
